Vienna Best area to walk along the Donau (Danube)?
Posted: Thu May 7, 2009 06:24 AM UTC
I'm taking my first trip to Vienna in a few days, and I'm just now realizing that walking along the Danube River might not be as simple as just finding the water and walking (as there is the Canal, the old Danube and the...regular Danube?)

I won't have much time there, but I really want to experience the river and people. Where should I go? (And which stop should I get off on?)

Thank you!

The Danube Canal flows through the city center - start from Schwedenplaz (underground 1 and 4) and walk along the banks. There are several bars along the canal open during the warmer months. The Danube Island (Donauinsel)at the Danube River is a wonderful recreation area for everybody. Underground 1, station Donauinsel, takes you there. Have fun!

the real Danube is mostly hidden behind a dam, when you like to walk along of it from the place where the ships dock near Reichsbrücke. (Metrostation U1 "Vorgartenstrasse)
Next station is Donauinsel : not the real Danube, but more scenic than the real thing !!!
and from there you might also step over the wild grass ofthe island and will get to the real Danube and find out it was not really worth it !
You could also take Tram D and go to the very end of it and there it is not far to the Danube and it looks better there in the north of Vienna in Nußdorf.
I could recommend this ONLY when you have a lot of time, otherwise take Donauinsel it is fast and easy.
