Planning a trip to Guatemala in November '09 and would like to learn some Spanish. Has anyone taken the Travelling Classroom 4-week program offered by tranytur? (This involves lessons morning or afternoon and excursions throughout the country in four different areas: Antigua, Coban, Panajachel and Monterrico). Sounds like a great idea but can't find any reviews at all!

I don't know the Travelling Classroom, but there are many reputable Spanish language schools in different towns. You live with a family, study half a day, and have the other half free. Schools often organize special activities like kayaking, climbing volcanoes, going to hot springs, salsa lessons, history lectures, etc. I can recommend Madre Tierra in Xela, run by an American and his Guatemalan wife, or if you like the hippie backpacker town of San Pedro on lovely Lake Atitlan, try the Cooperative Spanish School. Both are recommended by Lonely Planet, and there are many more to choose from. You can arrange with the school for your tutor to act as a tour guide and take you to markets or museums. Just plan ahead and pay her/his bus fare. If you chose a week each in Antigua, Xela, and Lake Atitlan, you would see three of the big tourist destinations. Then you could arrange a guided tour to Tikal for your last week.

Hello there,
Well the trouth is that I haven't done that but I will tell you that the Lake Atitlan is a great place to go to. I personally live here and it is a wonderfull place. While you are in this area I would suggest to visit Santa Cruz la Laguna and or Santiago Atitlan these two places are both full of magic and have lots to do and see! Hope you enjoy your trip! :-)
