If you can get yourslf to the City of Napa you may want to consider a tour via the Wine Train (www.winetrain.com). They offer a couple different packages that would probably meet your needs.

There are many companies that offer tours of the wine country out of San Francisco. Choosing one for your budget, most that are decent cost about $100 per person or drive yourself if you have a vehicle. The train is nice as suggested but you don't get off, so the day is lost on board if you wanted to see some wineries. I know of one tour company that uses shuttle vans and not the huge buses. Actually, the Wine Train does offer a combo tour of a train ride/meal and winery tour.

My family lives in Sonoma, so I'm partial to the wineries there!

You can do both Napa and Sonoma if you have a car, they're right next to each other. But Sonoma has a very quaint, almost European downtown, with an historical square and some good restaurants. Also Buena Vista Winery is there, Vianza, Cline and Jacuzzi wineries are on the road as you head to town and as far as I know the tasting is still free there.

Napa does have a cool tour of the Gloria Ferrer champagne caves. You can google any of the wineries I mentioned, or just go downtown Sonoma to the tourist office and they'll help you out.

If you don't have a car, you can arrange a tour by bus from San Francisco. That way you won't even need a designated driver!

You can drive yourself, it is a LOT more fun then being stuck in a bus and visiting only tourist trap wineries. I would rent a car, print some free tasting offers from www.econcierges.com and have the time of my life. Cars can be rented for about $30/day and with free tasting offers from that site, you really cant do it any cheaper in this economy.
