Forum Question Posted By: Replies:
Cape Town LAL School
Posted: Thu May 7, 2009 12:04 AM UTC
Hello, everybody!

I intend to spend some months in Cape Town by the end of this year. So, I decided to take advantage of this period to study some English. I made a research and found a school called LAL, in Sea Point.
Can any of you tell me anything about this school and/or the neighborhood (transportation, nice places to visit, nightlife etc)?

Thanks!

Hi
You will enjoy Sea Point location. It is a very 'happening' place in Cape Town.
Great nightlife, plenty of restuarants, and of course- the beaches & pools.
Word of warning, though. Be alert. It can be a bit dodgy walking alone late at night. Just be aware, as you would anywhere in any big city.

The Sea Point area has a lot of refugees from Congo, Senegal, Nigeria, etc. I guess the language school is for teaching English to these refugees whose home language is mostly French. There are hundreds of private schools and colleges coming and going all the time. My personal impression is that most of these schools/colleges are "illegal". (Your certificate/diploma will not be recognised anywhere else).

Then I found a link to the LAL school:

http://lalschools.com/lal-language-centres/englishlc/lalsouthafrica/adults00/capetown/lalcpttheschool/

Hehehehe. That is not a SCHOOL! It is a holiday! Quote:

"LAL Cape Town was established in 1993 and moved to bigger and better premises in 2007.

Set in the heart of fashionable Sea Point, the centre is just a short drive to the V&A Waterfront, Table Mountain and city centre, and only five minutes from the famous Clifton and Camps Bay beaches.

The school has 24 spacious classrooms, a large student lounge with a big screen satellite television, free wireless internet access, a great entertainment area with pool tables, bar, swimming pool, barbecue and garden area. You can book day tours, car hire and get information on local places of interest at the Social & Activities Desk.

Facilities:
24 Classrooms
Language Laboratory
Internet Room FREE ACCESS
Video Room
Library & TV Room + Video
Tour Reservations Desk
Swimming Pool
Bar & Barbeque Area
Student Lounge
Pool Room
Kitchen Facilities"

I'm surprised Gerald that they can call it a school. I wouldn't mind staying there.

I agree with Gerald and Lynne... Sea Point can be a little dodgy, you just have to be very aware.
Great idea making combining a learning experience with a holiday!!

Andres- there are very many good pages about Cape Town, and South Africa, here on VT. I suggest that you read some of them, and you will have a good idea of what to expect in Cape Town.
Top right hand side of the page is a box that says 'destination'
Type in Cape Town- and click GO.
This will bring up many Cape Town pages.
I also have made a page on Cape Town- I lived there most of my life. There is a LINK for Cape Town on my HOME PAGE.
