Canary Islands Staying a semester in Las Palmas.

Hello, fellow VT-ers,
One of my daughters will study a semester at the ULPGC (Universidad de las Palmas de Gran Canaria) in Spanish language and literature (in Erasmus students exchange with Pau University).
I am wondering if flat or house sharing is a current practice in Las Palmas and asking where (websites, agents, virtual or real notice boards. . . ) she should begin her search for an accommodation; no luxury (!!), just what fits to average students.

Hi!

Can't tell you about Las Palmas (never been there as student) but yes, sharing a room in a flat is common practice for students in Spain (given very few students can afford an apartment for themselves)

Your daughter may google "piso compartido Las Palmas" and sure she'll get plenty of offers (I hope she can read Spanish)

Otherwise, most universities offer accommodation services, or counsel services about accommodation to their students. I'd say this should be her first place to investigate. Sure the ULPGC has some info on its website.

Given the rooms for rent may vary a lot regarding quality, location, and these may not be as they look on the advertisement, committing for a medium-long term accommodation before seeing it may not be wisest idea. Many people stay at an University residence or hostel for 1-2 weeks upon arrival. Once there, they look for accommodation at the University boards and local newspapers, etc (or just trough their course mates)

being from there, but not in your situation, in general all students know how to share accommodations in Spain. I think the best place would be to check the local newspaper or expats groups already there. These site might help

the ULPGC also has a student referral for accommodation and posting on campus, she can start asking there for help on whre to go.

My daughter is almost fluent in Spanish, but I prefer she has a good idea of where she should go and what to do and not spend too much time in a provisional accommodation (hostal, hotel), and I thought VT could help a bit .
