Philadelphia Help getting around I476 bridge reconstruction
Posted: Tue May 5, 2009 02:59 PM UTC
I will be traveling to Lewes, DE on Saturday and understand there is bridge reconstruction on I476 near the Schuykill Expressway exit. How can I get around this mess?

I will be traveling south on 476 (formerly known as the NE extension of the Turnpike)from Northeast Pa and usually take it straight through to I95 south.

Philadelphia Check traffic reports before you try this (or any other) alternate

There are still multiple lanes as I-476 -- better known as the Blue Route -- goes over the Schuykill River. Thus, there may no delay at all. Rush hour, particularly in the morning, is most likely to be bad. There IS a way to completely avoid the construction, but this "cure" may be worse than the disease. Thus my recommendation to check traffic at all options before choosing.

When 476 hits the main PA Turnpike, go west on the Turnpike 276 towards Harrisburg. Get off at the next exit -- #326, for I-76 -- and go east on I-76 towards Philadelphia. Exit 331 will get you back on the I-476, and you are now south of the Schuykill River.

I again emphasize that this route may be worse than just going through the construction. There's no way to know other than to keep up with the latest traffic reports.

My commute to/from work goes through this construction during rush hours (before 9am and after 6pm) and there is little or no delay. they have left enough lanes open. You should be fine.
