I'll be visiting this month Cusco, MP and Lima. Is it common for foreigners as well as locals to wear shorts or will I be tagged as a turista?

I would suggest that you are very likely to be 'tagged as a tourista' whether you wear shorts or not.

Your general appearance and clothing may quickly give you away and taking a photo, looking at a map or staring at a building/view most certainly will...as will visiting anywhere of tourist interest......let alone the fact that you the moment you open your mouth it will be obvious that you are not Peruvian.

I have never understood the desire not to look like a tourist...that is what you are, and it will be as clear to local people in Peru as it would be if you were visiting the UK (and probably more so).

You seem to be somewhat over-concerned about this trip (wanting to take your gun 'for personal protection', now worrying about wearing shorts).

If that's what you think you'll be perceived of, then yes, you just answered your question.

Hmm, a gun-toting shorts-wearer. Doesn't remind me of any tourist I've seen. So as long as I'm not wearing shorts, people here will think I'm Chinese? But what does it matter whether people think you're a tourist or not? As long as you have dolares!

Isn't it the middle of winter there? Too damned cold for shorts.
