Jordan From Sharm to Petra
Posted: Mon May 4, 2009 04:57 PM UTC
Hi Fellow travellers

We are looking to travel to Petra in mid September by flying in to Sharm then travel by bus to Nuweiba, we then hope to get fast midday boat to Aqaba then bus to Wadi Musa then walk in to the spectacle call Petra.
Now the questions:
How easy is this going to be?
The book says there is a boat from Sharm to Aqaba does anyone have any details of this service as it could make life much easier?
We understand you can also get buses over land from Sharm to Aqaba is this easier? What are the draw backs?
Any other comments?

Any help gratefully accepted

Thanks Garf

Garf.
The answer is not easy. There is a ferry offered and run by AB Maritime. http://www.abmaritime.com.jo/main.html
It's up to you.

If you are saving money, bus it to Nuwaiba, but service (a kind of cab that can be shared is better). I would recommend staying at Nuwaiba or Dahab for a night if you can, it is very pleasant, not as crowded as Sharm, nice places with tents on the beach as well as fancy hotels. The ferry to Aqaba (info in the other post) is a much better idea than going overland by bus. You can cross into Israel at Taba, and then you have to go north to cross into Jordan and to Petra. But also got to say that the bus to Wadi Musa is going to be rough too. If you can afford it, try service/cab up.

Going overland via Israel is much faster and cheaper if you are traveling on a passport which does not require an Israel visa (almost all Western countries) - and should always be the choice *if* you do not mind evidence in your passport of having been to Israel.
