I would suggest you do some research into hotels online (try www.ipanema.com) and then ask again for any comments on those that interest you. YOu can also look for commments on Trip Advisor. "Safe area" for tourists usually means Leblon, Ipanema, Arpoador, and parts of Copacabana.

What is your idea of cheap? First of all the two highest season periods to visit Rio are #1 Carnival and #2 YOU guessed it, Christmas and New Year's. Maybe if you provide some idea of what your budget is that would allow folks here to give you better information.

You are not likely to find many hotels in that price range in an area that you would want to stay. You might have better luck finding a B&B try this one
http://www.ipanemabedandbreakfast.com/ if not search the B&B listings for Rio.

Check out the Sol Ipanema 3-star hotel right on the beach. Ask for a beach view so you can watch the New Year's Eve beach ceremony as Cariocas make their offering to the sea goddess Iamanja'.

Maybe PWLewis did not see that the poster was looking for something around $100 a night. I think the Sol Ipanema is a wonderful hotel but doubt he would be able to get a room that cheap, maybe $200 to $300 a night, but definitely not in the $100 range.
