i am gg to LA this wkend, i am from singapore. Initial plan was with 2 other frens but they are scared of the H1N1 flu and thus not joining me. Now driving from LA the SF seems exp for me alone. Any other cheap alternatives? I have about 5 days in SF any budget place i can stay alone?

If you don't mind hostels, (some do have semi-private rooms), you can visit: (www.tfthostels.com). The Fort Mason hostel, in particular, has a good location near the waterfront and pretty close to transit options. For other lodging options, you could click on the "Book Travel" link in the brown toolbar at the top of most VT pages. That will allow you to utilize several travel search engines, (Travelocity, Orbitz, etc), without having to leave VT. Having a rental car in San Francisco can actually be a bit of a bother, as parking is at a premium and can be costly. Traffic at peak hours is also quite slow. I always found driving on elevated highways, and on San Francisco's very steep hills a bit daunting as well. In the previously mentioned toolbar, you can also click on "Travel Guides". On the San Francisco guide you'll be able to access all the San Francisco tips, photographs and videos submitted by VT members. If you don't have plans to make stops between LA and San Francisco, you might check out air fares. Virgin America airlines, and Southwest Airlines, will sometimes have good fares on the route. Gary

I spent two years attending uni in San Francisco. One of my friends from Australia came to visit when I moved out and we stayed at the Green Tortoise Hostel, which was pretty good. Prime location right in North Beach/Chinatown. You can walk everywhere and most important the people who stayed there were fun to hang out with, unlike many other hostels. Skip LA and stay in SF if it is just you. LA you need to have friends with you and a car.
