Posted: Thu April 30, 2009 12:57 PM UTC
I am from Singapore and would be gg to LA on 9th May. All my tix paid and cannot refund. I would like to ask people living there to advice. Is the swine flu hitting CA hard? Will places like disney land close? or have temperature checks? People on the streets all wearing masks??

Should i or should i not go?

I did some googling around and everything seems (other than some closed schools) to be running as normal. Take your own precautions by washing your hands often and using hand sanitizer, keeping your hands away from your eyes, nose and mouth, and getting some Airborne (if you have that in Singapore) for your flight.

There's always a chance this thing could escalate in a matter of days but my gut feeling is that you'll be fine. I don't think lots of people are running around in masks but you can always purchase some here if it gets to that point.

Relax and have a good trip!!!

I would not worry about it.

1) The people who are most vulnerable are the very young, the very old, and people with compromised immune systems.

2) With one exception, all of the deaths anywhere near California have been in Mexico. What nobody wants to say publicly is that Mexico has a terribly inferior public health system. They are way behind on tracking this, and consequently they are way behind on notifying people, and so treatment is often delayed.

There has been only one death in the US, and he fell into both of the above categories: he was a toddler who had just come from Mexico.

If you are basically in good health, and stay out of Mexico, you should be fine.

If the swine flu epicenter were LA, people would still not wear masks! It would ruin our image! LOL

Disneyland would not close down even if Mickey and Minnie were on their death beds due to swine flu or any disease for that matter!

You'll be fine, come and enjoy LA and southern Cali. Any other questions about LA, let me know.

As global public officials said, this flu type has been transmitted from swine to humans many months ago or even for a year, and has since mutated. Since then, symptoms have manifested itself in Mexico (somewhere around Veracruz and has since spread all over that country), but this flu could have originated from anywhere, so closing borders is not a realistic public health option nor should all travel be halted. Although be aware that the level of outbreak has intensified to a Level #5 and WHO/CDC officials have advised against non-essential travel to Mexico, and some even cautioned against traveling to the US. If you followed the recent developments, it seems like the swine flu has effectively spread. In the US, the majority of confirmed cases are found in NY, followed by Texas, and California, etc. Although US swine flu cases have been mild ones, there is that slight chance of death as evident in the Texas toddler's death a few days ago. Read up more on this topic before making your final travel decision. Here's a link from the CDC re: updates on the swine flu: http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/. You can also "google" to see global and regional maps of the swine/H1N1 flu pandemic.

Good Luck!

Yesterday the numbers for even Mexico were revised. There were only 6 deaths in all of Mexico from the Swine Flu. This is a political move by the government to try and push a new vaccine and create a crisis where they can over throw some kind of freedom.

Don't let the news worry you. There are 17 confirmed cases, about 50 suspected cases, and no deaths in California from swine flu. Maybe a few schools have been closed for disinfection, but all other public activities continue as usual, and thousands of California high school seniors will bus to Disneyland this May. So, the odds of you getting sick are remote, and if you were to get sick, odds are you would suffer nothing more than ordinary mild flu symptoms. The masks don't do any good anyway, so don't bother bring one. If you are really concerned, buy a bottle of anti-germ gel to wipe your hands. The practice of frequent handwashing is a good one in any case to avoid any disease. Body heat sensor equipment may be set up at the security check station at LAX. So, if you have any sort of fever, you may be detained for further consideration. Enjoy your trip...
