Alaska Things to do near McKinley Princess Lodge

Hi all,

We're off for our honeymoon next week which is a cruistour to Alaska with Princess. One of our stays is at the McKinley Princess Lodge for 2 nights. We've been trying to book some excursions (through Princess) but all we've been getting as a reply is NOT AVAILABLE. Does anyone have any suggestions as to what we can do please? As I've been trying to find some info online but now we're finding out it seems to be in the middle of nowhere with not much to do!! We were trying to book somewhat active excursions such as kayaking, hiking, etc.

Would really appreciate any suggestions as we have a full day and a half and we wouldn't like to just stay in the lodge - which we've read mixed reviews about - good and bad!!!

Thanks for any help you can give!!

Hiking should be no problem if you don't need a guide. There are a couple nice hikes near the park entry area. Try the Mount Healy trail or a shorter one out to Horseshoe Lake. The park buses won't be running yet but you could try hitching into the park as the road is open to Teklanika now. If you can hitch try hitting Primrose or hike one of the river drainages if they are snow free.

Sorry just read your message. We will be there on the 20th/21st May. Anything else to do besides hiking? Are there any excursions/tours available from somewhere close by?

For activities your best bet is to check with the lodge? The park buses start running on May 20th so that opens up some options in the park. Check out http://www.nps.gov/dena/planyourvisit/things2do.htm for some ideas. River rafting would be awesome this time of year if they are running? I know Denali Outdoor Center is starting to run whitewater trips on the 14th. If you want to go rafting I would book it before you arrive. Check out http://www.denalioutdoorcenter.com/index.html for some background info on trips.
