Sri Lanka What plants?
Posted: Wed April 29, 2009 02:51 PM UTC
Anyone know the name of the plants that are in every room in hotels near the beach there? They are large seeds planted half covered in a shallow dish of soil and sand and the plant grows from the top of the plant. The seeds drop off the trees in all the gardens there.
Thanks

Hi,

Does the fruit look like this?

Then it's called “Vetakeiya” in Sinhala and belongs to the Screw-Pine family of 800 trees and shrubs. It's growing on many beaches in Sri Lanka.

It is called Mudilla (Barringtonia asiatica). I have the seed on my table right now.
