Fiji Car: to Rent or not to Rent
Posted: Wed April 29, 2009 05:53 AM UTC
I've read different things about driving in Fiji. I heard that it is easy to rent a car, but was also discouraged because of the whole driving on the left side of the road thing. I'll be coming from the US, staying in Nadi as a base. Anyone with experience renting a car and driving around Fiji, versus using Fiji's public transportation?

Fiji Car: to Rent or not to Rent

You are better off to hire a driver. The roads were in huge disrepair when I was there last year, and with the series of political disruptions, no money has been spent on them. Unless you are very adventurous and have very good driving skills you may want to rethink. It rained a lot where we were there and the roads became a total mess. half mud half tarmac and many many holes!
Others may advise otherwise though, just letting you know my experience.

I was there last fall and found that public transportation wasn't too expensive or difficult. I took a 1.5 hour bus ride for something like $7 USD. I also rented a driver at one point. It wasn't unreasonable, and it was nice to just have someone bring me around to the sights. I split with a friend which helped with the cost.

I agree with the above person about the roads. Some of them are in very bad shape.

One thing I found about Fiji is that it's more of a resort destination and less about easiliy perusing around the countryside. That can be done, but it's not as easy as other places.

On the flip side of the coin, a couple at our resort rented a car and found it to be a pleasant, worthwhile experience. So I hate to talk out of both sides of my mouth, but I have heard pros/cons about both. If your only concern is driving on the left side of the road, you'll get used to it in no time.
