Best beach and a beach resort to go with it? Posted: Wed April 29, 2009 04:47 AM UTC
Hi all,
we are thinkking about a long weekend for the weekend of may 25th.
1.Is the weather good for beach and walk about at that time?
2.What is the best beach to target
3.Which hotel by that best beach in San Diego woulod you recommend?
We don't mind paying more for a fine hotel.
Thank you in advance.

1. By the end of May, the weather should be nice enough for walking along the beach, but the ocean water will still be cold.
2. Choosing which is the best beach would depend upon your own criteria. Do you want pristine sand, craggy cliffs, boardwalks, water sports or shopping near?
3. The BEST resort hotel by one of the best(voted in the top ten, world wide) beaches in San Diego is the Hotel del Coronado.

The beach in front of the Hotel Del Coronado is lovely. We recently stayed at the Del and personally, I don't think it's worth the money unless you are a big fan of old buildings.
The original hotel was built in the late 1800's and therefore you will have to put up with the quirks of an old, historic building, such as creaky and uneven floors, doors to the room not square (and therefore are noisy as they let in noise from the hallways), plus tiny bathrooms. You pay a premium to stay there and I found service so-so. The new beach residences are beautiful with their own pool, but it's very pricey.
You may be able to get good deals if you check out their website.

Coronado is about four miles from downtown San Diego, if you cross over by ferry or take the Coronado Bridge across the Bay. Here you'll find Balboa Park. The San Diego Zoo also. Seaworld is about eight miles north. Legoland is a great place for little kids and it is about 35 miles from downtown SD.
The beach is just beyond the Hotel Del property and can be reached from the steps of the Sun Deck. Though it is not a "private" beach, it is usually never crowded as most people here use the section of beach just north of the Hotel.
They offer for rent, surrey type bikes and as the Island is rather small, it is easy to ride from one end to the other. At the north end of the Island, the Ferrylanding Market place has a small beach area that is on the bay side and it is a bit clamer than you'll find on the ocean side. I have more info about these spots on my Coronado page if you're interested.
