Northeastern Thailand Wanting to Visit Phimai-Buriram-Sukhothai within few days
Posted: Mon April 27, 2009 08:27 PM UTC
Hai all,
I've postponed my trip to June, but still, I only get few days. I'll arrive in BKK on 4th June in the morning (say, 8 or 9 AM), and leave BKK on 8th also in the morning at around 8. Tight timelime, isnt it? :-D

Now, as Ive narrowed down the choices, which one is d u think the most probable or better option?

A. BKK-Buriram-Phimai-Khorat-Phitsanulok (is there a direct bus from Khorat to Phitsanulok?) for Sukhotai-BKK

B. BKK-Sukhothai/Phitsanulok(by bus)- Buriram (if there's bus)- Phimai-BKK

I can see that Sukhothai will require an overnight stay, as it takes around 7hr from BKK. However, I hope it's possible to visit & explore Phanom Rung & Muang Tham from very early in the morning up to around lunch time before leaving for Phimai.Once at Phimai, it can be visited in the afternoon, then quickly take bus back to Khorat, connecting with bus to BKK.

Im not so sure about it, but maybe if there's bus connecting Buriram & Phitsanulok, i'd be a bit faster instead of going to BKK first.

Hope you can help me on this :-)
best,
Ali

There's bus from Korat to Chiang Mai /Korat to Chiang Rai and these buses have a stop at Phisanulok. The bus by Nakhonchai Tour company, take around 6-7 hrs. for Korat - Phisanulok. You can get a ticket at Korat Bus Station 2.

The website show timetable, although it's in thai but you can see the times when buses will leave from Korat. Have a look for the route Korat to Chiang Mai (bus no. 635)/ Korat to Chiang Rai (bus no. 651) There's many bues a day. What to worry it the bus connecting Korat - Phimai (which is a district of Korat) It will be local bus, I guess it's not many buses a day.

I have taken the bus from Bangkok to Khorat and a local bus from Khorat to Phimai a few times. The bus station my bus from Bangkok stopped at in Khorat is #2 near the Big C.

While at Khorat you might want to stop in at Ban Prasat, it is on the way to Phimai.

friends, thank you so much for the info. Now, i think i have made decision on which place to go first.
I'll go to Buriram first in order to visit phanom Rung & Muang Tham. After that go to Phimai to see Phimai park & the Banyan tree park. After Phimai, i;ll go back to Khorat and take the bus to Phitsanulok to go to Sukhothai.

The thing I'm really concerned about now is the bus transportation. yes, thanks to Wann, I know now that there's bus from Khorat to Chiang Mai which has a stopover @ Phitsanulok. But how about bus from BKK to Buriram? Which number is the bus from BKK to Buriram? and is the bus passing the Phanom Rung on the way or should I take another transport to go from Buriram to Phanom Rung?

Also, what kind of transport should I take from Phanom Rung to MuangTham? Can I go with soangthew or I can book motor taxi instead to go to both places?

thanks for your help on this

I usually drive on my own to anywhere nearby Korat so I have no experience going there by bus. The information about how to get there I'll quote from thai forums.

People said probably there's a bus go directly to Phanomrung from Bangkok but they won't recommend as the bus will go to the town of Burirum first and then another 80 km down to Phanomrung, which is not a direct way. They also wont suggest bus from Bangkok to Burirum.

They suggest taking bus (Bangkok - Surin) , start from Mochit and off at Prakhonchai (a district of Burirum) , some said just tell the bus that you will get off at Tako junction or in thai "Yak Tako" and then take local taxi, from there will be only another 20 km to Phanomrung. One guy took motercycle taxi for 250 Bt. I think other historical sites nearby best to use local taxi. The bus back to Korat I guess must start from bus station in districts nearby (Nangrong or Prakhonchai).

Hope it helps!
