New Orleans Day Trips from New Orleans
Posted: Mon April 27, 2009 03:15 PM UTC
We're going to be in NOLA for Jazz Fest next weekend, but rainy weather is predicted. What are some day trips that we might be able to take Saturday and Sunday? We'll have a car. Thanks!

Normally I'd say "the beach!" but, if it's going to be rainy, then that's probably not a good idea. A swamp tour is probably also out, although their boats are always covered (unless it's an air boat tour).
You could drive up the river and visit some of the old plantation homes. The stretch between La Place (west of New Orleans) and Baton Rouge has quite a few of these.
You could also drive into Cajun Country to visit some of the towns there. Since so many people are in the area, I'm sure there are other festivals going on that weekend.
Then there's driving east, into Mississippi and Alabama. Biloxi is a nice old town, as is Mobile.

I can highly recommend Dr Wagner's Honey Island swamp tour about 30 min drive from NO. Very informative, boat skippered by a local who lives on the swamp & yes the boats are covered in case of rain. Take a waterproof jacket just in case.
The tour of Laura Plantation is excellent (www.lauraplantation.com/), provides a good insight into life during the days of slavery.
Oak Alley plantation (www.oakalleyplantation.com/) is spectacular & just up the road from Laura, I would suggest doing both & having lunch at Oak Alley.
Hope you have a great trip.
