We are heading to Colombo Friday 1st of May, we are wondering we have 1 day to discover the area, and we want o go on a day trip to tea plantations any idea on where to get a day trip and also if there are other areas worth visiting near colombo?

There is not much to see in Colombo. Just another dirty and polluted capital in a 3rd world country.

You can do a day trip to Pinnawala and visit the Elephant Orphanage there. Bottle feeding of baby elephants is at 9:15 and 13:15 and the elephants (more than 70) are bathing in the river from 10-12 and 14-16. Also possible to extend to Kandy (Botanical Gardens and Tooth Temple). There are tea plantations and tea factories close to Kandy. Kandy is 116 km (3 hours drive) from Colombo.

Hire a car/van with driver for the day. AC car/van should cost you around LKR 10,000. Entrance fees: Elephant Orphanage LKR 1,250/pp, Botanical Gardens LKR 600/pp, Tooth Temple LKR 500/pp.

If you have 01 day, a trip to the elephant orphanage is ideal. You can also do a trip to Kandy and elephant orphanage but it would be too hectic. Not far from the elephant orphanage you can also visit a tea plantation with a factory.
