Berchtesgaden Bayern ticket to Berchtesgaden
Posted: Mon April 27, 2009 06:52 AM UTC
Would be travelling from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden. If there is a party of 4 people, would it be better value to get the Bayern ticket instead of a single day trip ticket for each individual? Can I use it for the local bus from Berchtesgaden station to the various popular sights.I read that the Bayern ticket can be purchased from the machine at Salzburg station, correct?

It's the better value for 4.
But it limits you to travel by train from Salzburg Hbf to Berchtesgaden. The buses are only covered inside Bavaria. Thus you cannot use the direct buses from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden.

> Can I use it for the local bus from Berchtesgaden station to the various popular sights.
Yes. With the exception that the special buses from the documentation center Obersalzberg to the Eagle's nest are always extra.

Yes. You can buy it from the DB ticket machines at Salzburg Hbf.

Are there two bus companies in Berchtesgaden region - SVV (Austria) and RVO (German)? If I have a day ticket from SVV then I can only take SVV buses but with the Bayern ticket,I can take both?

> Are there two bus companies in Berchtesgaden region - SVV (Austria) and RVO (German)?
SVV is the local public transport network of the Greater Salzburg region. Not a bus company. SVV covers parts of Austria and Bavaria.

> If I have a day ticket from SVV then I can only take SVV buses but with the Bayern ticket,I can take both?
SVV ticket: you can use all local public transport (regional trains and buses) inside the SVV zones you bought the ticket for.
Bayern Ticket: you can use all local public transport (regional trains and buses) inside the state Bavaria. An exception is that you can travel on the Bayern Ticket by regional train to/from Salzburg Hbf.

With either ticket it plays no role at all which company provides a bus or train service. It's only a question of the area which is covered.

You can buy SVV day tickets covering the train route from Salzburg to Berchtesgaden and use it (5 SVV zones). If you add Königssee 6 SVV zones. But SVV knows only single person day tickets, no mini group day tickets. That's why the Bayern Ticket is for this trip the cheaper solution.

Thanks for clarifying. Is it true that some ticketing machines do not accept cash and/or credit card issued by foreign banks?

And just for comparison, does anyone know how much is the single day bus ticket (from Salzburg) to cover 6 zones (to Konigsee)?

Cash: most do
Some older ones accept only coins.
I've seen ticket machines not accepting cash only on board of trains - but not in this region.

Credit cards: mostly not at all
DB ticket machines accept credit cards.
Don't know about SVV ticket machines. The ones of similar network I know don't accept credit cards. Their card slot is for other types of cards.

If you have problems with a foreign credit card is difficult to predict. The approval comes from a 3rd party specialist on verifying credit cards - not from the company which own the ticket machine.

Salzburg - bus - Berchtesgaden - Königssee (6 zones)
single ticket EUR 5,60
day ticket EUR 11,20
