Re: 6-8 hours local tour in Lourds Posted: Sun April 26, 2009 07:51 AM UTC
As Sally says, Lourdes is easily walkable and the sanctuary especially is very easy to navigate and there is plenty of helpful signage all around. There is also an info office ("Accueil" sp?) where you can find any further info you may be seeking. The railway station is very close to everything, but if you are leaving on a train at 10pm, you will probably not be able to see too much of the Candle Light Procession which of course, is the highlight of every day in Lourdes. Still you can walk around to see Bernadette's homes (The Boley Mill and the I think Le Cachot or something similar). You can catch the little street car train thingy that will take you to most of the sights. This is especially useful if you want to go up to the castle or to ride the Pic de Jer to the top of the Pyrenees. Don't be put off by all the souvenir shops selling statues and rosary beads, just remember that this is how the residents of lOurdes earn their living. The sanctuary itself is devoid of all commercialism and is a wonderfully peaceful place.
