No it is not possible.

Trenitalia trains go to Napoli Centrale station.

www.ferroviedellostato.it will give you train times,details and fares from Catania in English (link at top of page). You may or may notneed to change trains during the journey.

You don't need to book your tickets in advance, but you can if you choose to do so.

From Napoli Centrale you will need to take the Circumvesuviana (commuter-type)train to Sorrento. Trains go from more or less the same place as Napoli Centrale, one level down (just follow the signs). You don't need to book tickets in advance: trains are frequent and reasonably-priced. Journey time is around and hour, and Sorrento is the end of the line.

Timetables in English here;

http://www.vesuviana.it/web/en/Orari

Remember to validate (date-stamp) your tickets before boarding the trains (both types) using the yellow machines on the platform. There is an on-the-spot fine if you don't, and they do check.

No, you can't travel on the same train. The only railway reaching Sorrento is the Circonvesuviana, not managed by Ferrovie dello Stato, the Italian national railway company.
The Napoli - Sorrento ride on Circonvesuviana lasts 1 hour approximately, the ticket cost is 3,- Euro.
You might consider the chance of travelling by ferry boat from Catania to Napoli (www.tttlines.it) and by hydrofoil from Napoli to Sorrento (www.alilauro.it - www.metrodelmare.com).

If you take the Metro del Mare (or other) hydrofoil/ferry from Naples to Sorrento you will need a taxi/bus to the Beverello dock from Napoli Centrale and then a bus/taxi from the port at Sorrento up to the town.

Taking the Circumvesuviana is much simpler and easier if you are arriving by train.

A taxi from Napoli Centrale is also possible, but I suspect you are looking at around 100 euro for the journey.

Take the Circumvesuviana! :-)
