Tibet Tibet local guide

Does anyone have good experience and references of reliable local Tibet guides/tour operators? I am organizing a trip there with my family this summer (late July). I have been there a couple of years back and know exactly where I want to go visit again and what to avoid. My hope is to hire a local guide (English speaking) with a 4x4 vehicle for a week. It will fit perfectly with our family of 4.

Any recommendation will be greatly appreciated.

A friend of mine went to Tibet last week. They rent a Toyota landcruiser for 11 days. He has been working as a tour guide in China for few years so he negotiated the price directly with the driver. It's cheaper than the travel operators offered. June and July would be the peak season in Tibet so the price for the 4x4 vehicle is around 15RMB/Kilometers. You can try to bargain after your itinerary is fixed. As far as I know, to hire a good english speaking guide touring around main area in Lhasa would cost you RMB150-200 per day. For other regions in Tibet, RMB150 extra per day. Hope these information would be useful. By the way, I'm a Chinese :)

Thanks, even RMB300 day is very good price if you consider we have 4 persons. I don't want to drive myself as it is a pain to get travel permits. Last year some of the guys at work did self drive tour, ran into all kinds of road blocks and have to keep taking detours, not my way to travel.

Normally tipping for the driver is about RMB100/day. If you need, my friend can help you to arrange the guide and vehicle after he come back from Tibet next week.

Hi, I am the friend of Chongqing Tomato, I've just been back from Tibet.
Every one has his or her own favor of coming to Tibet, my clients this time, they are fond of villiages and life of Tibeten people.
So,we started from Lijiang in Yunnan Province(SE of China) via Shangrila(Yunnan Prov.) and ended in Lhasa, altogether 11 days. We didn't set actual sites and stops but pulled over wherever we wanted. So we had some additional funs including visiting Tibeten people's house, learning Tibeten language and making Tsamba and a delicious meal by our own. Anyhow, it was not a package and prebooked tour, but I guess it is a way to discover the real life and culture in Tibet.
I'd like to share with you some of my information based on my own knowledge and experience. You can leave your questions here or reach me by email: Waynewong122@126.com
