Alaska A mish mosh of questions....
Posted: Thu April 23, 2009 04:45 AM UTC
I am in the planning stages of a trip to Alaska and it seems there are so many glaciers to walk on, places to kayak, and take scenic boat rides.

Does anyone have any advice on the best places to do these activities because they are all expensive to do and I think I can only do each once....

As far as glacier walking and kayaking go, I am really only looking to do no more than a full day's worth. As far as the boat trips go, I think I need to decide between the Kenai Fjords from Seward or going to Whittier though Prince William Sound.

Also -- on a map it looks as if there is a road from Valdez to Glennallen....but I can't seem to find any public transport in between them....anyone know of any? I want to eventually get to Wrangell St. Elias National Park.

Finally, if I do a ferry trip through the Inside Passage, I think I will start in Skagway and stop in Juneau, Sitka, and Ketchikan, ending in Bellingham. How many days would you suggest is enough to take all that in?

Thank you so much!

A question first - how long do you want to spend in Skagway, Juneau, Sitka and Ketchikan? If you just want to spend a day to look around, you might want to look a a cruise ship, simple because with the huge discounts they're offering this year they're cheaper than the ferries. http://www.murraylundberg.cruiseshipcenters.com/

I don't think there is any public transport between Valdez and Glennallen. You may know that you can get into McCarthy from Anchorage by shuttle - http://www.alaskayukontravel.com/shuttles.htm

I'm a big fan of Seward ( http://www.explorenorth.com/alaska/seward.html ) - great kayaking and you can hike on Exit Glacier or head around to Whittier to hike Portage Pass and the glaciers in that area. If you chose to ferry, the most effective way to get from Seward is to fly from Anchorage to Juneau and then on to Skagway by air or ferry.

For kayaking consider getting a water taxi out of Homer, Seward or Whittier out to a 'location' and paddle for the day. Paddling out of any of these ports on a day trip won't get you very far from town if you are a novice. Glacier walking I would suggest out of McCarthy or on the Matanuska Glacier outside Palmer because of easy access and tour availability (in case you want to do more than just touch or walk on a bit of the ice). When public transport is too expensive or not available hitching is a viable option between towns in Alaska but you have to allow yourself time to get a ride and hope for decent weather for your wait on the road. The summer tourism season is a busy time on that stretch of road and you should be able to get a ride from one point to the next.
