Vienna Places to visit near Wienn

Hi!

We are planning a trip to Wienn for 4 days in June. Althougt I have just started to get information about Wienn, it seems to have a lot of things to see. Before getting information we wanted to visit Saltzburgo or Insbruck one day but perhaps they are too far, aren't they?

So we would like to know other possible places to see in one day.Thanks.

A daytrip to Bratislava, the charming small capital of neighboring Slovakia makes a really good day trip from Vienna. Take the fast hydrofoil down the Danube to get there and catch the train back. No need to book it as a tour, you can easily do it by public transport (more details on http://members.virtualtourist.com/m/92cd3/4e34c/9/ . Look under Off the Beaten Path and General on the same Vienna page for information about what to do and see when you get there)

The glorious monastery at Melk (80km from Vienna) is another winner. We did take an organised tour for this one and had a gorgeous day - a combination of lovely scenery as we cruised along the Danube (upstream this time) through the wine country of the Wachau and then a guided tour of the monastery itself. Again, you can do this by public transport - I'm sure someone else wil provide the details before this thread is finished.

You don't say if you will have a car or not.

www.viamichelin.co will give you driving routes and estimated timings, so you can judge whether Salzburg or Innsbruck are feasible.

The Austrian railway website on

http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp

will give you train times, details and fares in English. Salzburg is around 3 hours, Innsbruck around 5. Salzburg mnight be possible, with an early start and a late retrun.

Thank you for your answers.

We would like to visit a city with beautiful landscape similar to Hallstat, we saw yesterday some pictures of this city and it must be so beautiful... but it is far from Wien. We would use public transport.

Are Melk or Bratislava this kind of city with houses on the border of a lake or are the typical cities with a lot of monuments?

Thanks again

Both places are on the Danube River. Melk is a small town with the monastery built high above it on a crag. Bratislava sits on both sides of the river, the old city is all on one side. It too is dominated by a castle, has many very pretty buildings and lovely streets to explore. You'll find lots of photos of both places here on VT. The approach to both cities via the Danube is lovely.
