Whenever we have a flight early in LAX, we try to book hotels close to the airport. A very convenient, but not necessarily most inexpensive option, is the Courtyard LAX/Century. I choose this hotel not only because I am a Marriott member, but because I also have little kids and I want them to have clean non-smoking rooms with some space to play at.
All 179 guest rooms at the Courtyard LAX hotel feature separate office area, sofas and refrigerators, and two phones with voicemail and dataports. The free high-speed Internet is another one of the reasons I choose the hotel.
But the best part of it all is that it has a complimentary and reliable airport shuttle that leaves every fifteen minutes. The hotel is also near Santa Monica Beach & Pier , Beverly Hills/ Rodeo Drive, Manhattan Beach.
A main drawback typical of hotels like this is you have to pay an on-site parking fee (I think we get charged about $13 for night parking), and valet parking is available for a about $16-20 USD I believe. But apparentlty, there is an off-site parking available which I have not tried yet.

My friends who come into LA on business for one day like to stay at the Raddison Hotel, LAX. I visit them sometimes and it seems like this hotel is right at the airport. There rates are really good for the area and they do have internet connection, shuttle service, and great rooms. See website: http://www.radisson.com/hotels/calaair

For value for money I recommend the airport Super8 which has free (wired if I remember correctly) internet connection, free parking, shuttle service and light breakfast. It is also quite easy to get downtown and further afield from.

I always get my LAX hotels by bidding on Priceline or using Hotwire, I've never pay more than $75 and have gotten the Radisson, Westin, Crowne Plaza. Downside to blind bidding sites, non refundable, non changeable but I've saved a bunch of money over the years. Check the websites below on helpful hints for using those two sites.

If you book a hotel directly, make sure to enquire about parking charges if you have a car, most of the LAX hotels have a $12-15 per night charge. And also about internet to see if that is extra, seems like the higher budget hotels also have the highest charges for everything else...
