Where to stay in Saint Petersburg? Posted: Mon April 20, 2009 08:15 PM UTC
Together with 3 friends I'll visit Saint Petersburg next summer. I wonder where to stay. Although I'd appreciate concrete hotel tips too, I am especially intrested in hints about the quarter, where the chosen hotel should be situated. Safety, the possibility to go out at night and vicinity to top-sights (or at least effortless reachability to the sights) are important for us...

I stayed at this awesomely located hotel in St Petersburg and it was very affordable and right on nevsky Prospect --- the Nevsky Inn -- I just go out the door and voila -- I am walking on Nevsky towards the great Hermitage and the very walkable Nevsky where I chanced upon the Church of Spilt Blood...I chose the Inn because of the good reviews it got (even from a local guide) - but when I arrived, I went through a red door and had to climb 3-4 flight of stairs which looked like they came from a bomb blast, then all of a sudden, there was a door leading to a clean well-kept inn! Amazing adventure - the kind I like)...
I walked around Nevsky Prospect and had no problems at all - once I even ate fastfood and I had police beside me (but as long as you carry your ID and copy of passport and tourist verification/registration card, then you're fine...) The rules about registering with the city changes a lot all the time - and the hotel just did the registration for me and I had no problems...
I think I already made a hotel tip on my St Petersburg page (although I have not even put in all the sites I went to on my VT website! So much to write about Russia)...Have fun, jumppingnorman :)

Can recommend both the Comfort Hotel
http://www.comfort-hotel.org/
and the Herzen House Hotel
http://www.herzen-hotel.com/
in SP. They are actually in the same building, both occupying one floor. The HH is a bit more expensive but both offer value in a city where hotel prices are sky high!
The location is excellent - 5 minutes walk to the top end of Nevsky Prospekt, the Admiralty, St Isaacs Cathedral; less than 10 to the Winter Palace and the boats to Peterhof, maybe 15 to The Church on Spilled Blood, the Kazan Cathedral, 20 across to the Maritime Museum ... once you start walking in SP, you just keep on going ....

i answered same in the moscow thread
so ill post my info about our accommodation in st petes
again we dealt with our travel agent here and he worked with eruoscape agency to obtain us an apartment
st petes is a bit cheaper than moscow
my friend who was horrified by the poor standard in her moscow hotel was delighted and relieved when she walked into the dostoevsky hotel near nevsky prospekt
she really liked it and said it was good that there was a mall beneath so she could get food and bottled water
we still found it cheaper to get an apartment and at first were offered nevsky66 but that became unavailable so now we are booked in to the artists studio for slightly more for four nights we are
paying$1494 aud -$about 373 aud per night
a lot hey but we have stopped thinking that way
we will appreciate our local holidays a lot more now lol
take mosquito repellent and/or coils to burn if youre down near the river end

Hello! I am from Saint Petersburg and can recommend Astoria hotel:
http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/248/ - It's one of the most beautiful (though expensive of course), it's situated at the beggining of Nevsky prospekt, on St. Isaak's Square, just opposite St. Isaac's Cathedral http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/71/ (which I hope you are sure to visit), and in close proximity to such famous sights as Monument to Peter I, The Bronze Horseman http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/72/, the Hermitage http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/80/, Kazan Cathedral http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/262/, Church on Spilt Blood http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/254/ and other places of interest located on or nearby Nevsky prospekt - State Russian Museum http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/576/, Mikhailovsky Castle http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/533/, Bolshoi Drama Theatre http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/283/ and many other.
On the other end of Nevsky prospekt Moscow hotel is situated http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/249/ - it's a 4-star hotel with a view on Neva, which is located opposite Alexander Nevsky Lavra http://www.worldwalk.info/en/catalog/329/.
