Vienna Day trips
Posted: Mon April 20, 2009 06:49 PM UTC
I'll be in Vienna for 5 days soon with my 80 year old mother. I would like to spend a day elsewhere and I thought about Budapest by train. Is this possible for a day trip and if not what other trips could you recommend (our last day will be in Bratislava so rule that one out).

Thanks.

Have a look at the Austrian railway site for journey times etc in English (around 3+ hours)

http://www.oebb.at/en/index.jsp

A long day..but with an early start and a late return you would be able to see a bit of Budapest.

I was going to suggest Ljubljana or Maribor but they're too far for a daytrip.......pity.

Hello!
I would like to suggest Györ or Sopron in Hungary, close to the Austrian border. They are both very high on my whishlist because I have read that they are very beautiful. The train journey from Vienna could hardly take more than one hour and you still get a touch of Hungary and Hungarian food. It is possible to see both cities on a round trip by train.
Otherwise it's a little hard to recommend anything interesting/beautiful which is not too far away.
Regards Lars.

Check out my video of Budapest in the video section of this site. I've been to many cities and Budapest is one of my favorite. Wide streets, not crowded, wonderful people. I loved my visit there.

Hi Johnny, I've actually been to Budapest I was more wondering about the feasibility of making a day trip from Vienna. Thanks for the reply though. I think I'm pretty much set on Sopron now.

Thanks for the replies folks. I had a great time in Vienna and also made trips to Sopron, Baden Bei Wien and Bratislava and enjoyed them all immensely.
Budapest would probably have been too far from Vienna as was Brno but an hour travelling each way is about enough for a day trip with an elderly person.

Thanks again.
