I suggest you look into hotels within the Makati area. Specifically, you may check out Tower Inn Makati, Crown Regency and Hotel Celeste. All are along Pasay Road and almost across Glorietta and Greenbelt malls, about 10mins walking distance to Ayala MRT station as well as EDSA (main road where you can find north/south bound buses), and about 7mins walk to Park Square jeepney terminal.

Ayala/Makati is generally safe as it is the central business/financial district and popular among expats.

Cebu Pacific flies into/from NAIA Terminal 3, the newest terminal. During non-peak hours, terminal 3 is about 15-20 mins to/from Makati.

I'm not familiar with prices of DVDs in HK, but you can get "fake" ones in Manila for US$0.50 to US$1.50.

Intercontinental is within Ayala Center though a bit pricey. But sometimes, they offer promo rates. You may also wish to check out Dusit Hotel.

November is the start for Westerners coming in so those in the backpacking circle gets busy.
For equivalent AUD80 you can get a mid-range type accommodation easily in the Makati and Malate area.

I have stayed at the the Pearl Manila hotel on Taft Avenue. They have a website.Hotel has roof top pool, gym, piano bar, etc. It is 5-10 minute walk to robinsons mall and casino.Rail line is 100-200 metres away.Out the front of the hotel there is a jollibee, mcdonalds, internet cafe,24 hour store, police station...but like anywhere in manila, take a taxi at night..they are very inexpensive.I found the hotel to be clean, safe, friendly and good value.

Makati would be the best place to stay. DVD's are a lot cheaper in Manila 3 for 100pesos you can get new movies the day after they are released.Just watch the ones with 8 movies on 1 DVD there not as good.Rectro off the train has everything fake from coach purses to DVD's but not the greatest area but cheap everything and worth the trip. This is where I get my glasses for 20 to 40US instead of 200 to 300 in the US.NIKE shoes for 6.00 instead of 150.00 and they seem to last and look the same as real ones.

malate is cheaper but it is certainly seedy there and further from airport.
best place for u is saint illians inn in makati, 1860pesos a night i think and its 2 minutes walk from makati cinema square which is great if u want to buy cheap dvds- go down stairs to ground floor when u enter building.
50 or 60pesos for good quality single dvds, 70 for the ones with whole tv series or upto 16 movies on one disc.
