Cancún Travel Forum

Dear Forum: I'll be around the Cancun area in Aug (Riviera Maya, Playa del carmen. There will be 3 kids with me ages 2, 4,&7. Which one is better between Xcaret or Xel-Ha for family fun? Or to put another way, if time was limited and you have to choose one, which would you recommend. Thanks

I may be in there in June, so I would be interested in any replies.

We were at Xel-Ha at Christmas and had a great time. We snorkled on the open ocean before going and found the water pretty stired up, rough, and rather cloudy. Xel-Ha had something for all of us, and because the water was more calm and sheltered we were able to see a lot more. I found it to be good value. Sorry I can't comment on Xcaret as we didn't go. If you go to Xel-Ha leave early enough to visit the ruins in Tulum for a few hours early and then spend the day in Xel-Ha. We rented a car as we were staying in Porto Morales.

I've been to both and really enjoyed both parks, but I think young children might prefer Xcaret because there's more to do. Xel-Hal is mostly about water and snorkelling, but at Xcaret you'll also see animals, a Mayan village, and the fabulous night show. Snorkelling down the two rivers is also a lot of fun! So that's the one I would recommend if you're travelling with children. Hope this helps, enjoy your trip!

I havent been to Xel-ha but I have to agree with Jefie, I would definitely recomment Xcaret and DO NOT miss the night show!!!
