Lagos Trip to Shagamu via Lagos

Help!!!

I'm traveling to Shagamu in a few weeks and flying into Lagos. I will be staying for one week. I have never been to Nigeria before so here are my questions:

1. Cash or credit card?

2. What is the exchange ratio for naira to the u.s. dollar?

2. What are the names of some good hotels in Lagos? (I may need to stay 1 or 2 nights in Lagos).

3. Are there any decent hotels near the airport in Lagos?

I have been reading some information on this site, Never, Never show a credit card, You may also want to make sure you have security if traveling alone, I have been talking to someone over there and he said there are a lot of hot spots. So just be wise and careful!

It is a cash base city Lagos. If you use your credit card, for some reason they get the information and use it for other purchases. So it is advised not to use credit cards, even in the nicest hotels. And the hotels can range in prices, but you want one that has hotel transportation from the airport. I have read there is a lot of robberies along the airport road, so hotel transportation I would think be the safest.

I know playing around with this site, you can find an currency exchange, but I didn't see it for Nigeria. I think I would Google it.

Good luck and have fun!

Oh, yes one more thing someone told me when traveling to another country like Nigeria, you might want to contact the Embassy, if you have any questions. Also, it is a good idea to have a copy of your passport along with extra passport pictures (extras). That is just traveling advise. You never know when something can happen, and they are known for pickpocketing there. So just be smart about your belongings.

Hi. I have just come back from Nigeria. Take some US cash and only use your visa card to withdraw cash from ATM. However, visa cards from US will not work. The exchange rate (on the street) at the moment is about 145 Naira to $1US. Usually around 120naira.

I recommend that you organise to meet a security person to assit you with travel and money exchange. I can recommend a few people who work a tour company and are honest, and reliable.

Accommodation - the most sited hotel is the Sheraton. However if you want to pay half there are others that are of *** range. Clean, secure and have running water and generators (so you do have lights). If you want I can put you intouch with a couple of options.

Surulere - is a good area to stay in, or Victoria Island. Consider the Hotel October House. A local will always be able to negotiate a better price than a tourist. Again, I am happy to link you with contacts that can help with this

1) CASH!
2) about 150 Naira to the dollar
3 I think the Sheraton is supposed to be pretty decent and close to the airport.

Hi

I have lived in Nigeria but that was back in the 80's. Lagos even in those days was dangerous. It is more dangerous now. Use cash and do not give your credit card to any one. Sheraton is a good choice. Other advice given above is correct. Be careful.
