How long to drive from Bolzano to Verona? Where to park? Posted: Fri April 17, 2009 05:53 AM UTC
How long does it take to drive from Bolzano to Verona along A-22? Is there a lot of traffic? Is it a 2 lane highway? What's the speed limit?
Once in Verona, where are some good places to park? Roughly how much does it cost? Is there any restricted zone in Verona? I mean is there any area in Verona which requires a permit to drive through?
Thanks,
Raymond

It takes about 1,5 h if traffic is normal on the A22 which is quite a busy a two lane highway. The speed limit is 130 km/h unless otherwise stated.
Exit Verona Sud onto the the A4 to Venezia and then take the next exit to Verona Fiera. Follow the road direction Fiera/Centro until you pass under a train bridge which leads to a sort of big square. Here you find signs for Parking areas which you can follow and some of them are nearly in the city. Costs generally are between 1 and 2 Euro per hour.
As for ZTL (Zone a traffico limitato) look out for a post with a sign jungle and a camera on top. VT member effeti is from Verona and will surely be able to be more precise.

Hi Ray... How many questions!
So let's try to answer a few
The A22 is a 2 lane "mountain" highway. Traffic? No and yes. It is usually quite fast, but inweekends it may have heavy traffic (saturday going to the mountains, sunday afternoon coming back to the plains).
Time may vary from 1:40 to....4 hours... (but only if you pick the worst moment, the sky season is going to end).
Where to park in Verona? I have a few "transportation" tips on parking in my Verona page. Please have a look.
The parking Arena is the easier to see the old town, but it can be relatively expensive.
Yes, there is a ZTL (limited traffic zone): open in certains time, closed in the other (videocontrolled). But i would avoid it anyway: it's the historical center, and you would not find parking place anyway (you can always enter as a registered customer of the hotels inside):

As Francesco says, the ZTL in Vernoa is only the city core - see the map at http://portale.comune.verona.it/nqcontent.cfm?a_id=3221
The green area is the ZTL, the other areas are quarters with their own parking regulations (but no prohibition about driving there). And as Francesco said, you can drive even in the Zone Verde (the green area):
* dal luned́ al venerd́: (Monday through Friday)
dalle 10.00 alle 13.30 (from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)
dalle 16.00 alle 18.00 (from 4 p.m. to 6 p.m.)
dalle 20.00 alle 22.00 (from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m.)
* sabato, domenica e festivi: (Saturdays, Sundays, and holidays)
dalle 10.00 alle 13.30 (from 10 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.)
Note that if you do engage a hotel inside the ZTL, please tell the hotel your license plate number before you arrive and get them to confirm that they have notified the authorities. ..I am thinking that getting this done after the fact (like after you have been photographed and ticketed) is not going to work...in fact, there is someone in the Rome forum right now who was hit with the 107 euro fine (or whatever it was) because they didn't know to ask the hotel on how to get exempted...
Ciao', Francesco, godi una bella primavera? Piove oggi in Texas - e' molto buono pei pianti!

Re: How long to drive from Bolzano to Verona? Where to park? Posted: Fri July 10, 2009 09:25 PM UTC
I'm back from the trip.
We got to Bolzano no problem. But when we left, we couldn't find the right road to get onto A22 towards Verona. The entry seems to be going to the opposite direction. We ended up using the local road and enter A22 in the next interchange.
A22 did not have heavy traffic the day we were on it, a very pleasant drive.
Following the advice from the owner of the hotel we stayed, we went out to Lake Garda near Rovereto. It was a very scenic drive, took us an extra 1.5-2 hour, but is well worth it.
The place we stayed was just outside of the ZTL and we did not venture into the town by car. We took the bus and also lots of walking.
Thanks for all the replies in the thread. I had a great time!
