Buying clothes in Nice Posted: Fri April 17, 2009 04:05 AM UTC
Hello,
I'll try to get right to the point:
I'm a tall German going on a trip to France and would like to buy some clothes, there. I've heard in Paris it was rather difficult, because the people there (including men, of course) were shorter than Americans (or Germans for that matter).
Is the same thing true for Nice? In Italy and in Spain the people seem to be significantly taller in the North than those in the South...Is that true for France, too? (in that case, I'll know I have to find something while I'm in Paris or I won't find anything that fits me in Nice, either lol)
Merci beaucoup!:-)

Nice is such a tourist destination that I'm sure they stock clothes in many sizes, not just for the French who live there. People come from all over the world to vacation in Nice or Cannes. I wouldn't worry that you won't find things.
Good luck!

thanks for your replies...hehe I guess you're right...there are probably other tourists wondering the same thing as myself ^^.
I'll probably still try to get my clothes shopping done in Paris, though..its a tourist destination, too and much bigger :-). Plus the people are probably a little taller in Paris, too so all in all I should have less probelms.
thinking about all this Ive gotten really curious, now lol. Is the height difference for France true, too? that people are shorter in the south than in the North? i concluded that because thats how it is in spain and in italy, but then again sicily and southern spain (sevilla, etc.) are a lot further in the south than southern france are, so maybe its not even true?lol

Maybe people in the southern regions don't take their vitamins! :-)

Hi,
Why not shop from a French catalogue? They have more variety as sizes go, extra-tall and extra-short.
By the way, French sewing patterns differ from those you have in Germany, they have what they call Mediterranean shape. I am not sure it matters for male clothes, though :)

Hi,
thanks to both of you..the shopping clothes idea isnt really that important that I would shop from a catalogue (which I dont really like to do, because I never know what size I am lol).
What do you mean by mediterranean shape? Ive only heard that people in Paris were super slim (because of being obsessed with fashion), though ive heard the french had a slimmer built than us germans, too..never took that too seriously, but thinking of it the one french girl i know has a super slim built lol.
Does that have anything to do with what you mean by mediterranean shape (even though Im referring to Paris now lol)?

Basically yes
I mostly shop by mail – compare the distance between Paris and Berlin and between Paris and Moscow. Though I like German catalogues, I cannot use them as the clothes just do not fit in.

Hello,
I'm not sure I understood: You like German catalogues, but the clothes just dont fit in (because youre living in Moscow and us Germans have strange clothes?lol) or did you mean you do not fit into the German clothes, because us Germans are bigger/broader?lol
Now, I'm even more confused lol....but your "basically yes" was a reply to my assumption that people in the mediterranean weren't simply shorter, but also generally have a slimmer built than people in the north (or in Germany, etc.)?
Merci beaucoup

Well, Mak... I was just in Lisbon (very Mediterranean) for 3 days and I noticed men of all sizes and shapes. I guess it's not to good if we generalize about any citizens of a particular country. The women were all sizes and shapes, too. :-)

Information taken from
http://www.travelnice.co.uk/?p=190
Nice’s Zone Piétonne, or pedestrianised zone, on Rue Masséna is just off the Place Masséna central square. High-end chain stores, one-off shoe shops, a glitzy restaurant or two and several boutiques cover the 500m long road. Rue Paradis, just off this street, is home to the most chic stores in town. Among them are Sonia Rykiel, Giorgio Armani and Louis Vuitton.
Avenue Jean Médecin is highstreet shopping heaven. Branches of Zara, H&M and Habitat sell goods at significantly lower prices than their British counterparts. Midway along is the Étoile shopping mall with its inexpensive shoe shops and high quality tailors. Their three-storey branch of Fnac sells CDs, English-language books and also acts as a booking office for most of Nice’s music and sport events.
Galeries Lafayette at the Place Masséna end of Avenue Jean Médecin is a department store par excellence. The most famous names in French and international fashion are on offer over its several floors, and you should have no problem finding whatever you’re looking for - from fine gifts to take home, to the latest in designer wear as a present for yourself. One of the country’s premier retail names, a visit to Lafayette is a lesson in French style.
Aside from the many markets, Nice old town is home to numerous boutiques and art stores. Branches of Gaultier and Agnès B can be found close to the Cours Saleya pedestrianised hub. Modern art, classic painting and period furnishing can best be seen in the streets around Rue Droite, Rue Rossetti and Rue Saint Réparate. Spend an hour walking around the winding streets and you will come across home-made pasta, olive oil products, fresh bread, wine and stalls full of local produce.
Those with the time and an eye for a bargain can head to the Cap 3000 complex at St Laurent du Var, just west of Nice airport. Buses 10 and 11 run there from Place Masséna, or take the train to St Laurent du Var from Nice-Ville rail station. The place includes huge sports shops and thousands of square metres of clothes and shoes. Cap 3000 makes a great stop if you have a few hours to kill before a flight.
