Travelling in Tassie from 16 May (0955) -23 May (1005) Posted: Thu April 16, 2009 06:03 PM UTC
Dear Friends,
Please help to give some advise on my queries:
1) What car rental companies are available at Hobart Airport,
2) 3 of us are travelling. What car is recommanded to accomadate 3 large lungage? We are thinking of Camry as we try to get easy to handle car as we are not very experience driver.
3) Hows weather in Tassie? What precaution should we take while driving (e.g. Wheel protector) or for self skin protection?
4) is there any day light savings in Tassie?
5) base on our flight schedule, we will miss going salamaca market. Is there any similar market we can go to?
6) is the any factory outlet worth going?
7) as we dont intend to drive too much, we will be travelling from Hobart=>port authur =>swansea=>Bicheno=>Campbell Town=> Ross=> Hamilton=> hobart. Please recommand any interesting/unique accomadation. We are looking at cottage type, farmstay instead of hotel
8) What is the average price to pay for 1 night stay in cottage/farmstay type of accomandate for 3 person? we just need a clean and comfy place
9) are there any well-known or must try resturant that we can hv our meals?
Thanks

Can't help you with much except the weather will be cold in May. If you want info on towns, have quite a bit on my pages.

Due to extreme climatic changes the World is experiencing at the moment, trying to predict the weather can be difficult because of local, on the day variations.
Most places now are seeing weather conditions well outside the norm.
The information below should be used as a guide only.
Here is the average weather for Hobart for this time of year.
Enjoy your holiday.
May.
High 54f / 12c
Low 40f / 5c
Rain 3.00in / 77.0mm
Rain days 13
Hours of sun 4
Daylight hours 10
UV level 2 = Low
Humidity = None
Sea temp 60f / 15c

Car rental companies at the airport = Thrifty, Avis, Budget. I suggest you hire a station wagon. And no unless you were planning to travel thru the mountains you won't need wheel protectors. Daylight savings has finished for the year...........so Tassie is on the same time as Vic NSW and Queensland. Skin protection = a good moisturiser. Clothing = warm clothing plus a raincoat or some wet weather gear, light clothing underneath....you can always strip off a bit if it gets hot. But definitely a wind proof jacket of some sort. Accomodations and eating out I will reply again when I get back to Tassie.....( born and bred there) am currently on holiday myself for next 8 days in Queensland. Hope this bit helps.

Can't answer all your questions, but just wanted to mention that I have used www.wotif.com.au to book accomodation in Tasmania before and have had good experiences. This site will give you an indication on what to expect to pay, and it is a good source for discounted accommodation.
I stayed at a lovely B&B in Hobart called Mere B's - or was that Merry B's. Something like that. It was rather cute. Don't worry about not liking hotel accommodation... Tassie is not really into those big flashy hotels. Plenty of homely accommodation to be found.

If you are not an experienced driver please take care. Some of the roads that you will be driving on are winding, but also very beautiful and it is easy to lose concentration andveer to the wrong side of the road if you are not used to driving on the left.
You won't need wheel protectors. An sunscreem can be a good idea for your skin as the sun can shine brightly. Wear several layers of clothes that you can add to and remove as the weather changes (sometimes we have four seasons in one day.
There will be smaller markets in many towns on saturday and sunday.
If you search accommodation online, it will give you suggestionsd and prices.
Don't waste time going to the factory outlets. Unless you are buying food they are not good. We don't have many factories here so it is just another name for a store.
There are a lot of good restaurants. If you give me some idea of the sort of food you like, I could suggest one to suit you.
Hope this helps,
Sharon
