hotel : which area?

Hi folks,

Which area do you recommend to stay? I'm coming to HK next summer but not fixed anything yet. I'm nominating some hotels as my base at first but I'm at a loss which area I should stay in. Kowloon? Hong Kong island? Lantau island? Please someone give me an advice. Which area should I take? Why?

I'm visiting HK not on business but just a short getaway. Ordinary one.

Thanks in advance.

I always find Kowloon better than the Island - for a start, the view is better.

Anywhere you decide to stay in HK is easy to get to assuming you will be staying around the harbour and not up in the new territories.

If it's your first time, I would suggest staying somewhere close to an MTR station so that you can get around more easily (This is not too difficult as the MTR is fairly extensive on Kowloon and Northern side of the island).

the ferries are so regular that it doesn't matter where you stay
choose your hotel by price /facilities etc

Hey, Satoshi-san, welcome to Hong Kong! Let me plan a VT-Meeting for next Summer, don't try to run away huh?!!!

I will suggest you to stay in TsimShaTsui (Kowloon side). It is near to the harbour, ferry, and lotsa shopping malls. You can also take a train or bus to Mongkok area where is the local markets and cheap stuff (like Ueno). The harbour view from Kowloon side is better.

Second choice will be Hong Kong Island, stay around Central, Causeway Bay, or Wanchai area.

Nope, don't stay in Lantau Island unless you want a getaway from city life. That's country side with beach, mountains, trails, buddha, etc.

BTW, are you bringing your son?

Ouch!!! Can't cheat the party gal's eye!
Hi Virginia, you caught me sniffing around very quickly. Well done, my sister : ) Ok, I owe you all about the meeting plan.

Well, according to you all so far, it seems that I had better getting a nest near to the harbour on Kowloon, right? Since my staying will be a very short one of a few days, the more convenient the better.

Thank you all for the suggestions so far.

Highly recommend Tsim Sha Tsui are due to its proximity to the MTR and close access to restaurants and shopping districts to Mong Kok, Sham Shui Po, Admiralty and Causeway Bay. They are all within 20min from Tsim Sha Tsui.

I would recommend the Marco Polo Hongkong Hotel in Harbour City. It is right next to the Star Ferry and in the heart of Tsim Sha Tsui.

Hmm... some more tips...
YMCA Seaview room is very good!
Avoid Kowloon Hotel, room is SUPER SMALL, like a cubicon, the only advantage they have is free internet access inside every room.
Yeah... Marco Polo, I heard many people recommend this but never check it out myself.
