Johannesburg Overnight in Johannesburg
Posted: Tue April 14, 2009 09:50 PM UTC
I'm going to be in transit in Johannesburg for a day (noon one day until 7 PM the next) this summer. Where should I stay and what should I do? I like to wander around. Any shopping I do would be curios and souvenirs (not clothes I can get at home.) I won't have a car.

Any suggestions would be appreciated. I want to stay somewhere halfway nice but not extravagant. I'd like to see a bit of the town without putting myself in harms way.

I would look at staying in the Sandton area of Johannesburg. That is the business centre, but with world class shopping centres, and good nightlife ( restuarnts and clubs)
The hotels would all have a variety of day trips they could offer, like a visit to the lion park, Gold Reef City etc.

Hope you have a great trip

Regards

Mike

Try the Garden Court Maude street in Sandton, it is part of the Southern Sun Hotel Group. The website www.southernsunhotels.co.za
Everything will be within walking distance of the hotel, and it is safe.
If you want to go to Gold Reef City ( not something I would do) you will need to get a taxi to take you.
Or you could stay at The Sun Square in Fourways at Montecasino. Lots to do and see there too. The Sun Square is also part of the Southern Sun Group, you will find on the same website as above.

June, how is Rosebank these days? Is the Sunday market worth a visit?

(My wife will be with me for a weekend at the Balalaika Hotel, but we have overdone Sandton in the past)

Yes, the Rosebank Rooftop Market is still going strong.
Rosebank is fine if you're only overnighting.

Balalaika Hotel is a good place to stay, also in the heart of Sandton/ Just noticed you are from Cape Town and will be quite familiar with Jhb. Enjoy, I replied to your forum question thinking you were from out of SA.
