Machu Pichu Posted: Mon November 17, 2003 11:54 AM UTC
Hi!
I´m planning to go to Machu Pichu in April/May Is that a good time to good or can you recommend another month? Also I´ve heard that Machu Pichu is going to be closed down for tourists sometime in the future. Does anyone know if that is correct and if so, when?

Hi
If you have a choice I would go in late May if possible. This is the beginning of the dry season and will make it more enjoyable as you will not have to hike through rain and mud. I went in the first week of June last year and had a great time. You can look at my pages for more tips or email me if you have any questions. I have not heard if it is going to be closed down or not.......anyone else out there???

On my last visit to Machu Picchu in 2002 they told me that the place is going down(!) on the north side by a velocity of 1 cm per month. At that time investigations were being made to measure if the volocity seemed to change and if there were necessary to make any precautions, for instance restricting the numbers of tourists at the same time. I saw some measuring instruments set out on north side (visible on my original photo but perhaps not in the foto in my travel tip). However; I am not aware of the results of the investigation.

Late May! Posted: Tue November 25, 2003 11:58 AM UTC
We were there in September, and did not hear anyone said the site would be closed. We did see some restoration work.
I agree what the suggestion of late May, into the dry season. No fun for treking during rain. We were there mid-September, first day was cloudy and very warm (a t-shirt and pair of shorts will do - but we hardly saw any Peruvian in shorts), so good for climbing up to the top of the Huana Picchu (the peak shown on any photo as the background of the site); the second day was bright sunny, very hot.
Do remember to bring a wide rim hat or just buy one as we did in Cusco - the Sun is very strong in Cusco already, needless to say if you even have a plan to go to Lake Titicaca area.
Have a good time!

Hello,
I hiked to Machu Pichu in the second half of May (last year) and the weather was almost perfect. During my 10-day stay, it only rained once on my thrid day of the hike. It was a light rain, lasted only a couple of hours. I think May is the best time to go for the weather and for small number of tourists as well.
Enjoy!
