Somerset Where to stay
Posted: Fri April 10, 2009 03:26 AM UTC
I am planning to do research at the Somerset Records Office in Taunton during the last two weeks of July. Is it practical to stay in the area without renting a car? Or is it practical to take a train every day from Bath, Bristol of Weston-Super-Mare? Thanks for all suggestions.

Taunton is a popular tourist destination and there is a range of accommodation available for visitors from B&Bs to Hotels. The end of July is in the peak holiday season so it would be as well to book accommodation in advance.
If you plan to spend all your time in Taunton it would make more sense to base yourself there rather than spend, time, energy and money on commuting each day. It is an easy place to get around on foot.

The Tourist Information Office as in Taunton Library and they offer a telephone booking service for accommodation and general information including brochures.

I agree that if you are researching in Taunton then staying there makes much more sense.

It is a pleasant enough place, and you will be able to make use of local buses and trains if you wish.

will give you local bus service information and www.nationalrail.co.uk train times and fares.

I agree. If you're planning to spend a lot of time in Taunton then stay there, it's a pleasant enough town with penty of accommoation.

If you have time left to explore then I'd suggest a car because you can see so much more and get to places which have little or no public transport.

Thanks. Two friends will be with me for a week and we're trying to rent a cottage to keep the cost down and do our own meals. Every one of them that I've found so far (and I've looked a lot) requires a car.

It is not surprising that self-catering accommodation is largely outside Taunton itself. That is the nature of such things.

So really you have to balance cost of car rental versus cost of b&b/meals out in the town itself....unless you can find a s/c place on a good bus route.
