Alaska Whittier or Valdez for Port William Sound one day cruise
Posted: Fri April 10, 2009 01:51 AM UTC
We have most of our Alaska trip planned out except one - we are having a hard time deciding of the one day cruise offers the best Port William Sound glacier tour? We will be traveling the Glenn Highway and the scenery near Valdez we've read is beautiful but the Columbia glacier is not as good as in years past. We also are visiting Kenai and a side trip to Whittier is not out of the question either. We are doing a day cruise to Kenai Fjords.

Any feedback is welcomed - we will be in these areas last week of May in an RV.
If we don't do the cruise out of Valdez, we probably would spend that time in Kenai area instead. That is why we really could use some feedback.

Hands down the Kenai Fjords Tour out of Seward is the best combination of wildlife and glaciers. I personally wouldn't waste my time with more than one glacier cruise. Its just ice – once you've done one eight hour cruise you may have seen enough of it? You can find plenty to occupy that extra day on the Kenai Peninsula if you don't do a second cruise.

I second the above recommendation for Seward based tours. They've got the best of it and you won't need to drive through a timed tunnel like you would going to Whittier. Also, there's more to do in Seward than Whittier (though I myself enjoy fishing out of Whittier, it's not got much else, in my opinion). By the way, not that it matters really, but it's Prince William Sound, not Port William. Hope you have a great roadtrip and glacier tour.

I agree...go to Seward. You'll see a couple of glaciers on the KFT trip if you do the National Park trip (you won't need to do the longest one, you'll see plenty on the 6 hour trip) And, if you need to see more glaciers while there, go to Exit Glacier just down the road as you come in to town. You can walk right up to it and there are rangers to answer questions for you.
