We are going to Alcudia in August and so it will be a busy time! We are also about as far from Palma as you can get, but we want to take a trip on the Soller Train.
I wondered if anyone had any tips for planning the day? I want to take as leisurely ride as possible rather than just hop-on and hop-back straight-away - maybe stop off along the way for photos.
I have the map and timetable - however I need to plan this in with a trip by bus to Palma as I prefer not to hire a car while on holiday.
Any tips or info about your trip?

The Soller train is likely to be very busy in August - I remember how busy it was in November one time. If you don't want to drive - which is how I got to Palma from Pollenca - I would suggest that you aim to find the earliest departing bus from Alcudia so as to get to the train before the crowds arrive. There was a photo-stop on the train, no station stops when I went, and if you time it right you should have time for a meal and look round in Soller before taking the last train to Palma to connect with the bus back to Alcudia.

Another option would be to join an organised day tour - this will include the train to Soller, Puerto Soller and the Torrent de Pareis as well as some spectacular mountain drives and a boat trip. Look for the 'Island Tour' at the tourist office or in your accommodation, several companies offer this tour. I've done it independently and on a tour - both have their merits. If you decide to do it yourself then make sure you get the earliest possible bus from Alcudia as Ranger advised above. The bus station in Palma is adjacent to the Soller train station which is handy but the last train back to Alcudia leaves quite early so do check the timetable - I think it was about 6pm when I did it and it was very full!

Yes I think I have decided on an organised tour since I hate having to hire a car when abroad.
(I spend hours on the road in the UK so I like a couple of weeks off!)

We returned from our holiday last week - we "did" the organised trip in the end and it was a great success.
For €50 each, we took a coach to the station just North of Palma, caught the train, stopped at the viewpoint overlooking Soller, took a tram from Soller to the port, took a catamaran ride to Sa Colobra, and then the coach back to Alcudia via the snake road with all the marvellous views.

Well worth the money in my opinion, and a truly magical day.
