A second place I would like to visit from Porto is Viana do Castelo. Is this a place ok for a woman traveling alone to visit?

Easy transportation from Porto?

Once in the city, is it walkable?

I don't know specifically about Viana do Castelo but Portugal is generally safe for a woman travelling alone provided you take basic precautions.

Viana do Castelo is easily accessible by train from Porto's Campanha station. Journey times vary from 1hr 30 min to about 2 hours. one way fare is €4.75. A change of train is sometimes required at Nine.

There are also regular buses ( I have seen them) but you will need to ask as more than one company provides service. Buses are in some cases quicker than the train if time is a factor.

Viana do Castelo is definately walkable. I go there every 2 years so I should know! The best way to get there from Porto is by bus. Takes about 1.5hrs and stops only a few times. There is no direct train from Porto station, so it's a bit of a hassle changing at different stations.

It is a much smaller and quiter city than Porto, but equally as beautiful. I am a woman and I never felt unsafe, even at night.
