Vilniaus Apskritis Approximate travel costs - food, public transport, and train from Berlin and Warsaw to Vilnius
Posted: Mon April 6, 2009 04:16 AM UTC
I'm sorry if aspects of this have been covered in other posts, but I need several specific questions answered at once.
I'll be travelling to Lithuania for a conference, and the easiest way to get my workplace to provide funding is by detailing all the Lithuania-related travel expenses (i.e., not australia-europe airfares, as we will also be doing our own travel in Europe, it becomes more tricky).
So I need a broad brush estimates of food, public transport, and getting to Lithuania from Western Europe, so that work will actually fund me. I've already figured out accom estimates .

Could people help me with any or all of these issues?

1. A broad estimate of how much food will cost daily? Costing down the middle I guess - we won't be restricting ourselves to tinned baked beans, but not 5-star restaurants each night either. Maybe simple continental breakfast, sandwich/Lithuanian equivalent for lunch, and a nice (but not pricey) restaurant for dinner, plus a snack and a drink or two.

2. Getting to and from the old town to Mykolas Romeris University (north of the river). On the map, it will probably be a 3-6km journey, depending on where we end up staying. I am assuming there will be some form of public transport - any ideas on how much this would cost daily (i.e. return trip)? Or else, approximates on taxi fares for a 3-6 km journey and back?

3. Getting from Western Europe to Lithuania. We'd like to go by train, and I see there is a route from Berlin to Vilnius through Warsaw. From my brief searching, it also seems I pay for the 2 separate legs to and from Warsaw. Warsaw - Vilnius I think is ~ 25 pounds/euros/50 AUD. But I saw in another post that booking a retun costs slightly less than oneway, around 20 Euro. And I think Berlin - Warsaw is ~90 Euro.
So would an approximate estimate of ~200 Euro be correct for the return journey? Or will a Berlin-Warsaw return fare be much less than the 2x oneway fares I have caluclated? I did look for return fares, but www.bahn.de wasn't that forthcoming.

Thanks so much for your help - any detail at all would be great!

By the way, I will of course look into all of this myself more thoroughly later, I'm not being lazy, but for now I just need quick and approximate estimates, to guarantee the funding in the first place.

Hi,

1. 1 euro = 3,45 litas. It doesn't change, litas is fixed to euro.
In the Old City (Senamiestis in Lithuanian) I would recommend:
http://www.aularestoranas.lt/index.php?id=54&lang=EN (they also serve lunch at a fixed price of 10 litas or so)
http://www.meniu.lt/cat_item.php?strid=1079&id=3406 sorry, no English translation, nice place, a bit more expensive
http://www.meniu.lt/cat_item.php?strid=1079&id=3417 good food, not expensive - main course ~ 12-15 litas.
http://www.vynine.lt/Meniu/tabid/263/Default.aspx just scroll down and you'll find menu in English - the best food I know in Vilnius, but it's French :)

There are many cafes in Old Town, also pizzerias, like Cili Pica, Fortas or Mambo Pica. You can try our national cuisine at http://marceliukeskletis.xz.lt/kontaktai.html or Cili kaimas.

When you're out o money :), you can eat cheap, but decent meals in Vilnius University, Faculty of History, or in Big Yard - ask for Morgas Cafe (in Old Town) or Romeris University (I'll tell you how to get there).

Do you know that Lithuania is a country of excellent beer? Don't forget to visit beer restaurants like http://www.alausnamai.lt/alausnamai.php?id=renginiai or http://www.avilys.lt/

2. We have buses and trolleybuses and microbuses here in Vilnius. The bus Nr. 10 will take you from Cathedral Square (Arkikadra) to Mykolas Romeris University. The site of city transport: http://www.marsrutai.info/vilnius/?a=p.routes&transport_id=search&l=en
You'll see written: cost 1,80 Lt. That's not true. The price of a ticket is 2 litas now. Microbus - 3 litas.

Thankyou so much, that is really helpful detail :)
I will take a look at those restaurant websites.
To clarify, where at Romeris University did you say was cheap to eat?
