Going to Cairo for work starting 25th April Posted: Wed April 1, 2009 09:53 PM UTC
Hi all,
How are you doing ?
It is a great surprise for me to go and work in Egypt for a while ... didnt expect to see all the beautiful things to see there so soon ...
Anyway, I m sure Ill figure out what to go and see prior and once there.
I was wondering if Cairo is a social place, easy to meet people, can we drink alcohol and so on ???
Thanks for your advice !

Howdy there
i hope that you ll have great time and lots of fun in Egypt.
as well i hope that you ll not be there for long as summer near by
in Aug it can be so hot around the red sea.
for drinking holy water when you arrive to Egypt you got 72 hours to buy a bottle of scotch and 2 pack of cigarettes for a very cheap price.
do that even if you dont smoke ,it can earn ya lots of money
enjoy your work
Cheers

When we lived there Stella beer (definitely not Stella Artois!) and (very bad) local wine were quite widely available. And Egyptians ate very sociable people. Enjoy!

Cairo is totally SOCIAL! Hehehe...goodlooking women are appreciated (too much sometimes), so just be on your guard. I have heard of stories like Felucca? (little boat on the river) captains trying to take advantage of women, so just be aware of these things. You will not have any problems looking for socialization, but just make sure you take the necessary medical precautions so that you'll enjoy partying -- like making sure you avoid the tap water and being up-to-date on your Hepatitis A (and maybe even B) and tetanus shots....Enjoy, Norman :)

Re: Going to Cairo for work starting 25th April Posted: Wed April 8, 2009 08:55 AM UTC
Cairo is big party time around Zamalek, the posh neighborhood next to Downtown, which is loaded with cool bars, restaurants and expats having parties at their home. There is also nightlife in neighborhoods such as Islamic Cairo and Downtown, less posh but equqlly interesting.
You can buy alcool in specialized liquor stores, but you'll be limited to local beer (Saqqarah beer is nice) and local wine (not good). You can also find local vodka but it's not advisable to drink it as it's not safe. better buy alcool any time you travel, at the duty free or in your country of origin, and bring it in. You do find good alcool in party places but it's very expensive.

Cairo is super social, though the nightlife is quite samey. The biggest complaint I have is that there isn't much decent music to go out to (though it depends on your definition of decent of course)! You can buy alcohol easily. There are a few companies that deliver it to your door - Drinkies is the most famous. There are actually more bottle shops knocking about than most people realise (I live 10 minutes walk from Midan Tahrir, and I have 2 off-licenses and a juice bar selling booze within a five minute walk)! Also lots of bars around town - either trendy ones like La Bodega on Zamalek, or more baladi ones like Horeya in Downtown. www.nileguide.com/destination/cairo has loads of info on what to see and do, where to eat, and where to party. You're gonna have a great time!
