Lads weekend in Cardiff Posted: Wed April 1, 2009 08:00 PM UTC
hi all Welsh speaking VTR'S ;-)
We are planning a stag weekend in Cardiff in September. We are having an afternoon at Chepstow races on the Frdiay,Comedy Club Friday night, and a morning clay pigeon shooting the following day.The rest of our time I would guess will be spent frequenting local pubs and bars.
Are there any bars that we should try to avoid,we are not youngsters, all are 40+,so we are not stupid, but we want to sample the nightlife Cardiff has to offer, without any aggro. We're not clubbers, but enjoy decent music and the craic.
Any tips would be appreciated
cheers

I have several friends who love going to the bars and clubs in Cardiff and from asking them it seems that the only time to be careful with is a Friday night when there's an influx of lads and girls from 'outside Cardiff' and the area around the Millenium stadium late at night needs a little care. Other than that they say that Cardiff is fine and suggest you try the Brewery Quarter (off the High St) and Mill Lane (end of the High St).
Cardiff Bay has several bars and restaurants which suit all ages but you may struggle getting back to the centre of Cardiff late at night as some taxis wont drive down there.

Dw'i ddim yn siarad cymraeg but I think dave's advice is on the money! There are a number of large national chain pubs/clubs (Walkabout, Jumpin Jacks, Wetherspoons, O'Neils etc.) in the centre of Cardiff so you will know what to expect from them. But Mill Lane certainly has one or two nicer (and smaller) bars/clubs, as well as outdoor seating in clement weather (which you will have to pray you get in September). I quite like The Yard (lively modern conversion of a large "Brains" beer pub) next to the Brewery Quarter. There's also some good restaurants in that area.

cheers guys !
I know its stating the obvious, but sometimes its better to ask.We have been to cities all over europe and britain in the last few years and never had any bother so I don't envisage anything different in Cardiff.
Must admit,we've have never been to Wales so its a first for us.Looking forward to the horseracing and the clay pigeon shooting, which sounded a bit safer than the Kaleshnikovs in Estonia,so that may have swung it!
I'm sure we'll have laugh,Kenny Rogers and Dolly Parton theme for the weekend so if you see some odd looking guys in Stetsons and sports bra's you'll know its us!!
all the best and thanks again for the info

Good advice so far.
Would also like to mention the Old Arcade in Church Street and the City Arms in Quay Street, both traditional Cardiff boozers suitable for the agegroup you describe.
If any of your guys are of a sporting inclination and you have time, there is a tour available around the Millennium Stadium

cheers guys,thanks for the info
I am guessing we will be all sported out by the time we've been to the races and shot a few clays,so I don't think I will be dragging them around the millenium stadium, impressive as it is :-p
I'll make sure I take a few notes with me and drop in on the pubs you have suggested.
thanks again
