Singapore What to do and what to eat in Singapore?
Posted: Wed April 1, 2009 05:20 PM UTC
We are currently in Singapore and I would like to know what are the main attractions and must see spots other than Orchard Road? Also, what should we eat? Does Singapore have a national dish? I'm currently staying north (I believe) of Little India, on Jalan Besar, in between Ferrer Park and Lavender stations so we can pretty much get anywhere as we purchased an MRT card.

We are on a lengthy trip so we are budgeting but when it comes to excellent food we gladly whip out more cash. Bottom line is the cheaper the price the bigger the smile! I know its very diverse here but what do you all recommend?

I agree, the hawker centres are the best places to eat. Food halls in the shopping malls and other buildings are excellent too, they're similar to hawker centres.

A particular favourite restaurant we use regularly is No Signboard Restaurant in Geylan which is very popular, specialises in seafood but has plenty of other dishes too, and Geylan's a great area to visit anyway, especially in the evening.

Other attractions are places like Clark Quay, Little India, Chinatown, Bugis Street, local areas such as Toa Payoh etc. All are easy to reach by MRT.

The botanic garden is good, Chinese Garden, Mandai Orchid garden, the zoo, a trip to the islands...

Singapore is definitely a FOOD HAVEN!! I think that is about 90% of what the locals do; and it is good!!
Specialty not found many other places is NONYA food. My favorite is LAKSA; a big bowl of lots of things in a coconut broth/milk, and spice it up as you like. Is sufficient for a meal!
ENJOY!

Yes, I would agree that the food centres (located islandwide) would be an idea place to go for dinning experience at a very reasonable prices.

There's so so many choices of good but one should never miss the:
1. Chicken Rice
2. Chilli Crab (spicy)
3. Laksa (spicy)
4. Rojak

The list goes on.

For getting around and select the best outlet, go

I don't know whether you are interested in Zoos, but Singapores would have to be one of the best in the world. The 3park pass is great value, includes zoo, bird park(excellent) and night zoo. Sentosa Island is great also, plenty to see and do, we enjoyed Images of Singapore, shows Singapore from its beginning to now in wax models, very informative. A cheap option if you like walking, is pick up one of the informative walking tour maps and do this. It shows you all the sights and tells you about each. We saw so much this way, wish we had time to do some other of the walks. War history, and Changi is a must visit, very sad. There is heaps to see in Singapore.I have quite a few tips on Singapore on my pages. Enjoy your time there.

Thanks everybody! I am a garbage disposal when it comes to food so I will definitely try all the recommendations. Did the Singapore flyer today at a perfect time. When up about 7pm and caught sunset, lights, and night time viewing, it was fabulous. Orchid garden is on the list tomorrow since my wife loves them (its what she chose for our wedding years ago over roses, etc.)

There is definitely too much to see here and someday I hope we return as we are leaving to Kuala Lumpur on Saturday.

Thanks again! (Hello Norman, how are the twins?)
