Lhasa Train ride from Beijing to Lhasa
Posted: Wed April 1, 2009 03:54 PM UTC
Hi Everyone,

I forgot to post these questions in my last posting.

Has anyone ridden the train from Beijing to Lhasa?

How long is the train ride and how much does it costs? My trip is in September.

Also, does anyone have any tips on how to deal with high altitude sickness?

Thank you

" does anyone have any tips on how to deal with high altitude sickness?"

Drink plenty of water and take it easy for a few days. If you get real altitude sickness, go to a lower altitude or your live could be in danger.

Also read my Warnings of Dangers tip on my Tibet page.

PS
I got up to 5008 Meters, over 16400 feet and did not have problems. But everyone is different.

I ride the train on the way back from Lhasa to Chengdu. You most likely will not get high altitude sickness as it goes up gradually and very long time ( probably 3days from Beijing). Few years ago when I flew to Cuzco Peru ( about the same altitude as Lhasa) I did get some mild altitude sickness at night during sleeping (sudden woke up with headache cold shivering like having flue) but on day time as walk around town it went away. It lasted for about 3 night. I went hiking up on Inca trail for 3days up to 5200 mtrs ( at Dead Woman pass), I never had any problem. I even slept well and more comfortable than in Cuzco hotel. Not to worry the train crews to Lhasa know how to deal with it they carry oxygen tank.
