Florence Siena and San Gimignano
Posted: Wed April 1, 2009 02:39 PM UTC
During my stay in Florence for 3 nights, I would like to visit Siena and S. Gimignano. Could I do it by myself on public transport in one day or should I join the tour for one day excursion ? How could I do by myself on bus or train to Siena and San Gimignano and back to Florence ?

you can go by train to Siena and by train and bus to San Gimignano, I went in 2 different days but I think you can go in a day if you know the schedules

I recommend the bus due to the train station in Sienna is quite far from the centre, and yes, you can visit both cities in one day (on your own I suggest)

You can go by bus to Siena and to S. Gimignano. You have to take these buses at the bus station near the main train station in Florence. There aren't any direct buses to S. Gimignano, thus you have to take onte to Poggibonsi and then another to S. Gimignao. Ask for the leaflets with timetables at the bus station.

Yes, you can do it yourself.

Get the bus to Siena from the Sita bus station more-or-less opposite Santa Maria Novella railway station, The tourist information people in the office opposite the station will tell you the way, if you need help.Buy tivkets at the office within the bus station.

Buses to Siena are better than going by train,a as the railway station is some considerable distance from the historical centre.

From Siena you can get a bus to Poggibonsi, then the bus up to San Gimignano.

Bus timetables here (click 'Linea Firenze-Siena'):

http://www.sitabus.it/wps/portal/DovePartire_Toscana

Poggibonsi>San Gimignano bus timetable here:

http://www.sangimignano.net/tourist-informations/bus-timetable.php

Coming back, you may as well get the train from Poggibonsi to Florence. www.trenitalia.com/en/index.html will give you times, details and faes in Engish.

No need to buy tickets for any of these journeys in advance.

I'd recommend to spend a whole day in S. Gimignano and another day in Siena.

That's ok. As long as I can reply in English, mostly. Can understand far more than I can speak.
