Please be very careful about sending any money as a deposit. We were defrauded a few years ago after a recommendation in these pages (though we pursued the matter through the police, and eventually - over a year later - got all our money back). It helped that my wife is Brazilian, and that we speak fluent Portuguese.

Robine, can you please name the company or owner you dealt with and detail the circumstances. I believe that would be doing a service for future posters on Brazil forums, and aid those of us who post recommendations.

A poster, probably in all innocence, provided the e-mail address of somebody who turned out to be a con artist, and who demanded a deposit (by telegraphic transfer) for a flat which turned out not to exist. After that experience we took to staying the first couple of nights in a hotel while checking properties personally, until we found somwewhere where we stayed for several years running (with no advance deposit). I'm afraid that I can't recommend this latter flat, although we found it very convenient, because the estate agent representing it is unreliable, and speaks no English, and the owner (or, rather, the owner's mother) is a pain in the behind.

I hope you donīt mind me suggesting the very charming Bairro Peixoto - a tiny little hidden neighbourhood in Copacabana - therefore very next to Ipanema - where you might find some really nice and quiet flats at a lower cost than the always very expensive Ipanema.
