I am flying with my friend to Hurghada, we want to spend there a couple of days
and then rent a car and drive to Luxor. Does anyone know whether it is possible for a private car to join the convoy Hurghada-Luxor? If so, can you just simply join it or do you need a special permission? And where can we find out about the departure times of the convoy?

I know that there are no more restrictions to travel privately during daytime between Hurghada and Luxor (6 a.m. - 6 p.m.), but is it really safe to travel outside of the convoy during the day? I mean no stops by local criminals
etc?

Hi. I am not sure about the private car joining a convoy. You may be able to contact the Tourist police in Hurghada or Luxor. I have driven during the day from Luxor to Hurgada and Hurghada to Luxor with no problems. However, DURING the day is when you should travel. You may encounter the officers at various check points between Luxor and Hurghada no problem there either, just show them your passports.

Yes you can hire a car now and drive it to luxor or cairo.although the convoy still runs,you no longer need to join it.you are now free to drive to luxor in your own time during the day.
There are acouple of places you can stop on the way.
If you want to go with the convoy,join it at safarga,about an hours drive from Hurghada.You can also catch the bus from the upper egypt bus station in Hurghada it has aircon and if you catch the bus back at night they give you tea on board.good luck

hi I dont really recomend to rent a car in egypt the traffic is very dangerouse.
but if you want travel to luxor from hurghada i have nice company over there who make nice trips with private guides and very nice staff. the cars have good aircondition and they know everything about egypt.
