it was suggested to purchase cuban rum and cigars at the duty free at the airport. are you allowed to bring it back to the states or will it be confiscated?

It will most likely be confiscated if they find it. Goods manufactured in Cuba are not allowed into the US.

I have brought both back and never had a problem. Cigars incarry on never more than 5. On the Rum I prefer Guatemalan Ron zacapa (sp). Flor de Canya is very good though.

lagoatitlan2002,

Just a question: Did you declare them or just put them in your suitcase? I have also brought back cigars from Cuba and never had a problem either, most likely because they didn't find them. It doesn't matter if its one or a hundred, if US customs finds a cigar or any product made in Cuba, they will confiscate them.

Didn't declare them. I have only been asked about cigars once in New Orleans, And dodn't have any that time. If you are woried about the risk it is best not to get them, becuase they are exspensive and you could lose them. For my taste Dominican cigars are just as good and I have already commented about the rum. The cuban stuff is mainly just for the novelty as for as I am concerned.

Sorry, I should have proof read before posting. Is there a way to edit after the fact?

Guatemala has some of the best rum anywhere, known as Ron Zacapa Centenario. It would be crazy to risk something that could be confiscated when you could legally bring in something that is outstanding.
