São Paulo going from Sao Paulo to Iguazo Falls
Posted: Mon March 30, 2009 09:23 AM UTC
What is the best way to get from Sao Paulo to the Iguazu Falls? Can one go on his own by bus or plane without a tour and is it a problem to go by oneself from the Brazilian to the Argentinian side? How long is the bus trip? Does one need two days or is one day enough to get to the falls from Sao Paulo and back again? Thanks in advance for any advice.

I don't know how many days you will stay in Brazil...
But bus travel from São Paulo to Foz do Iguaçu is the best transportation for tourists. Pluma is a international bus company that serves fine both cities:

By road you may enjoy many sightseeings instead of airways. São Paulo is 1010Km far from Foz do Iguaçu, or around l,5 day long to be seated in coach trip.
There is no problem in passing crossing border to watch the falls. However the spanish/portuguese fluency shall be important in dealings. Spending two days in Foz do Iguaçu is enough.

It is better to fly from SP to Foz. lots of flights and can get good deals on them.
the brasilian side to me is the more fantastic side, but you should see both sides of the foz. the brasilian side is a city, the argentine side is a quiet town. good eating on both sides.
I would allott two days for the falls.. in fact you could leave very early in the morning from SP and spend the day on one side, the other on the other side and get back to SP on the second day late evening, if you are pressed for time.

Fly from S.P. to Foz, if you can afford it. Use the time you'd might spend on the bus elsewhere, seeing more of Brazil.
As to getting around once there. there is a public bus that runs from the town to the park. This is true of the towns/park on both sides (Brazil and Argentina). Each bus goes past the respective airport. There is another bus that connects the two towns. It passes through passport control at the border.

the trip by bus is long; i did it from Curitiba and it took 11 hours, Sao Paulo is another 4-5 hrs away. You have good advise in taking the plane, TAM and GOL have regular service and good pricing.

I stayed at Bombu hostel in Brazillian side where one can take a 1 day bus tour to Argentina side to see the falls. They also have their hostel at Argentina side.I found it hassle-free and reasonable.
